Operations

A mathematical operation is a function that takes one or more input values (operands), and produces a precise output value. The most commom operations involve two operands which are added, subtracted, multiplied or divided.

Whole numbers, are real numbers or natural numbers

Addition

To add several large numbers together, the numbers are positioned as follows: the largest number comes on top and the second largest number underneath the largest, etc. Written on top of one another, in columns, per single digit. Bbeginning on the right-hand side, Ones above Ones, Tens above Tens, and so on. Under the to-be-added numbers. a line is drawn. The sum, then, is written in the area underneath that line.

To begin the calculation the Ones are added together, and their sum written under the dividing line, within the same column. If the sum exceeds 9, the new power is moved above the next column of Tens, to the left, and added there as a 1, 2 etc., depending on the power. These Tens are counted in the same way as the Ones, and then the Hundreds, and so on, until all columns are counted.

Subtraction

To subtract several large numbers from oneanother, the numbers are positioned as follows: on top of one another, with the largest number on top and the second largest number underneath the largest, and so on, making sure that all digits align beginning from the right-hand side, with the Powers as follows: Ones above Ones, Tens above Tens, and so on.

The Ones are subtracted from one another, and their saldo is written under the lowest number, with a line separating the numbers to be counted from the sum. When a higher digit is subtracted from a lower digit, during counting, 1 is subtracted (borrowed) from the next column to the left and a 10 is added to said nr. The next columns will be counted in the same fashion, until all columns are counted.
