Binary Numbers

Binary numbers are called bits, which is a portmanteau (merger of two words): binary + digit.

In decimal counting we speak of powers (multiples) of 0 to 9, whereas in binary counting we speak of powers of 0 to 1.

Binary counting, just like decimal counting, makes use of positional notation to designate powers of the base range: a column to the left carries double the weight of a column immediately to its right. Hence, the (decimal) weights of columns in binary digit notation are, from right to left: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc.
